A prototype down-hole steam generator that holds potential for increasing oil production at the same time it cuts back surface pollution is undergoing its first field test in the Kern River Field near Bakersfield, CA. The prototype down-hole steam generator is rated at 7.5 million Btu/hr compared with the 50 million Btu/hr generators presently being used for multi-well steaming programs in California's San Joaquin Valley. The prototype generator was developed for use in ecnhanced oil recovery operations. The test at Kern River is being conducted to determine environmental impacts of the new system and to analyze a technique for increasing the percentage of recoverable oil. Development of the special generator is part of the US Department of Energy's Project Deep Steam, which has at its target the deepe
