Title: Recent commercial experience of RCD and BOC Unibon

Conference · · Natl. Pet. Refiners Assoc. Annu. Meet. Pap.; (United States)

Two hydrotreating processes, the RCD Unibon process, a fixed-bed catalytic process that removes sulfur and metals from fuel oils or feeds for conversion units, and the RCD Unibon (BOC) (Black Oil Conversion) process for upgrading vacuum bottoms by molecular weight reduction and contaminant removal, are licensed by UOP Inc. The RCD Unibon process is in use at the Kashima Oil Co. single-stage unit which was designed for desulfurization of 45,000 bbl/day of Kuwait reduced crude to a 1% sulfur level and has performed excellently since 1970, and, for the two-stage version, at the Asia Oil Co.'s Yokohama refinery which was designed to desulfurize 30,000 bbl/day of Kuwait reduced crude to the 0.3% level and which has operated for over four years without unplanned shutdowns. The RCD Unibon (BOC) process has been in use since 1973 at the Natref refinery in South Africa, which is a 7700 bbl/day unit. The development of a new catalyst, the RCD-8, which has improved metals removal from 65 to 87%, asphaltene conversion from 46 to 81%, and extended catalyst life by > 50%, is also discussed.
