How catalytic-cracker feed composition affects octane catalyst performance
In fluidized catalytic-cracking pilot tests at W. R. Grace and Co.'s Davison Chemical Division, paraffinic, aromatic, and mixed feedstocks characterized by UOP K-factors of 12.6, 11.4, and 12.0-12.1, respectively, were processed under identical conditions (920/sup 0/F, 60% conversion) over a conventional high-activity zeolite-cracking catalyst CBZ-101 or an advanced octane-enhancing catalyst of the W. R. Grace and Co. Octacat series Both Research octane numbers (RON) and Motor octane numbers (MON) of product gasolines obtained with the Octacat catalyst were higher than those for the CBZ-101 products. The RON difference of Octacat over CBZ-101 gasolines increased from 1.4 to 3.6 units but the MON advantage decreased from 1.3 to 0.8 units as the feed characteristics were shifted from aromatic to paraffinic. As feed paraffinicity increased, the olefin content of the gasolines increased and their aromatic contents decreased. These effects were attributed primarily to the reduced rate of hydrogen-transfer reactions over the Octacat catalysts.
