Comparison of the electric-utility industry with other major business sectors
Despite significant increases in both product demand and revenues, the electric utility industry's financial health compares poorly with that of other major industrial sectors. The electric utility industry has expanded both production and revenues at a greater rate than for the average of all manufacturing industries. Most other industries with favorable market growth have achieved strong financial health. The electric utility industry has fared worse finanially than most other industries who have realized increased demand for their output. The reasons for this dichotomy lie in fundamental differences between the electric utility industry and other industries. These differences include price regulation, large capital requirements, and long construction lead times.
