PWR (pressurized water reactor) primary water chemistry guidelines: Revision 2

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6321697
PWR primary systems have experienced relatively few problems, owing in part to maintaining chemical conditions that have ensured high integrity of components, fuel cladding, and pressure boundaries. However, there is a continuing need to minimize radiation-field buildup to maintain occupational radiation exposures as low as reasonably achievable, provided neither fuel nor materials integrity is compromised. Considering the importance of water chemistry in controlling materials integrity and radiation fields, a common, industrywide set of operating chemistry parameters is warranted. These guidelines present such a program. The first edition of the guidelines was issued in 1986. This document is the second revision, and it considers the most recent operating experience and laboratory data The guidelines were prepared by a committee of experienced utility industry personnel through an effort sponsored by EPRI. Participants included chemistry, materials, steam generator, and fuels experts to ensure that the guidelines presented chemistry parameters that were optimum for each set of operating and material conditions. Each EPRI-member utility operating a PWR participated in generation or review of these guidelines. Therefore, this document serves as an industry consensus for PWR primary water chemistry control. It represents a report from industry specialists to the utilities, documenting an optimized water chemistry program. 53 refs., 20 figs., 12 tabs.
