It is possible to measure and interpret lateral vibrations of the horizontal chord of a Birmingham roof truss as a reliable indication of the tension present. The semi-empirical equation presented for calculating tension appears to be valid for trusses in shale roof but may have to be modified for other roof material. Instruments for measurement of frequency are available as off-the shelf items but have not been certified as permissible for general use in the mines.
