Nature of active sites in catalytic zeolites and metal dichalcogenide inclusion complexes

Applications of zeolites include oil spill cleanup and petroleum refining. Zeolite ZSM-5 catalyzes methanol conversion to gasoline. Studies were made on the active sites, and the thermal, ion exchange, electronic, and chemical properties, by Moessbauer, EPR, luminescence lifetime, and EXAFS spectroscopy on europium-exchanged zeolites A, X, Y, and ZSM-5. The europium zeolite catalyzes thermolytic water dissociation by a process which probably involves europium conversion between the 2+ and 3+ oxidation states. X-ray spectroscopy differences between the surface and interior of zeolites may influence the determination of zeolite selectivity; this was studied by Auger electron spectroscopy in order to observe metal migration and reduction. A study of the isomerization of 1-butene by europium zeolites showed the influence of the silica-alumina ratio, extent of europium exchange, activation pretreatment conditions, structural integrity, cation migration, and impurity levels.
