A method to prove the fact that the string tension sigma in strongly coupled lattice gauge theories is of the form sigma = -log ..beta..+sigma-tilde, where sigma-tilde is an analytic function of the inverse coupling ..beta.. = 1/g/sup 2/, is presented. Its relation to random surface methods, in particular to the work of Debrushin and Holicky-acute-accent, Kotecky-acute-accent, and Zahradnik, is discussed.
