The methanation activities (A/sub m/) were measured in a 3:1:6 H/sub 2//CO/He mixture at 523/sup 0/-673/sup 0/K and 1 or 10 atm over 0.7-11% Ru/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts prepared by adsorbing Ru/sub 3/(CO)/sub 12/, H/sub 4/Ru/sub 4/(CO)/sub 12/, or Ru/sub 6/C(CO)/sub 17/ cluster complexes from pentane solutions or impregnating aqueous RuCl/sub 3/ on alumina support. A/sub m/ consistently decreased with increasing Ru dispersion of the catalysts, when the latter was characterized by the ratio of chemisorbed CO to H/sub 2/ (R), rather than by H/sub 2/ chemisorption. The distribution of C/sub 2/ plus hydrocarbons and the C/sub 2/ plus/C/sub 1/ ratio of the product were nearly identical for all the catalysts, but the olefin/paraffin ratio increased with increasing R. Apparently, chain growth is little affected by the size of Ru particles. A/sub m/ is probably limited by the availability of chemisorbed hydrogen, which is also critical for paraffin formation. The metal-support interactiton, which increases with increasing Ru dispersion, as shown in IR studies of CO adsorption, may be responsible for the observed differences in catalyst activity and product composition.
