Role of static hexadecapole deformations in subbarrier fusion reactions between heavy ions

A systematic study of the contribution of lambda = 4 deformations to the enhancement of subbarrier fusion cross sections is carried out. The analysis is based on calculations that cover the full range of values of hexadecapole deformations found in actual nuclear systems. The interplay of this shape degree of freedom with the presence of prolate quadrupole deformations is also comtemplated.
