The reaction of carbon monoxide pulses in hydrogen over molybdenum hexacarbonyl supported on dehydroxylated alumina and pretreated in hydrogen or helium at 300/sup 0/-500/sup 0/C had a turnover frequency of approx. 0.04/sec (compared with 0.24/sec over nickel); relative conversions of 1.0, 2.8, and 3.6 at 300/sup 0/, 400/sup 0/, and 500/sup 0/C, respectively; and methane/ethane/propane product ratios of 1.0:0.12:0.04. The catalyst activation procedure had little effect on the reaction, as the catalysts apparently reached the same steady state. Catalysts prepared by activation of molybdenum hexacarbonyl supported on partly dehydroxylated alumina had activites that gave approx. 10% of the conversions of the corresponding catalysts on dehydroxylated alumina. The surface states of the catalysts after the various activation procedures are discussed.
