Mechanism of some conversions over ZSM-5 catalyst

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)
Intermediate species and reaction steps of the formation of higher hydrocarbons from methanol on ZSM-5 zeolite were elucidated by product analyses of the reactions of deuterobenzene (benzene-d/sub 6/) with toluene, ethanol, or ethylene, of deuterium oxide with ethylene or propylene, and of deuteromethanol (CD/sub 3/OD) with methanol or benzene. The results suggested that carbon-carbon bond formation is a Broensted acid-catalyzed electrophilic alkylation, i.e., that the main propagation step in the conversion of methanol is the electrophilic methanation of olefinic intermediates.
