The effect of reaction products on the previously described reaction of 10Vertical Bar3< CO in H/sub 2/ on a commercial fused iron ammonia synthesis catalyst was studied on a catalyst pretreated in oxygen at 500/sup 0/C prior to the usual hydrogen-reduction, which was relatively stable. The addition of CO/sub 2/ to the reaction mixture diminished CH/sub 4/ production by 8%; the replacement of CO by CO/sub 2/ diminished the methanation reaction and decreased the production of higher hydrocarbons. The addition of 0.6% water to the feed inhibited the reaction; the replacement of H/sub 2/ by 0.6% water stopped the hydrocarbon formation and increased CO/sub 2/ production. The addition of 10% ethane to the reactants had no significant effect; the replacement of H/sub 2/ by ethane yielded methane at < 10% of the methanation rate, as the catalyst had some hydrogenolysis activity. The reaction of 10% ethylene/H/sub 2/ produced methane, ethane, propane, and butane in a reaction that deactivated with time in a manner that indicated that ethylene does not carburize the catalyst; on a precarburized catalyst, the production of higher hydrocarbons was rapid as chain growth through CH/sub 2/ or CH groups formed directly from ethylene eliminated the rate-limiting step of their formation from CO. The results substantially confirmed the previously developed mechanism.
