High-ozone concentrations in the Northeast are the result of a complex interplay between precursor emissions and meteorological conditions. To better understand these factors, a major field data collection program was undertaken in the northeastern United States under the auspices of NARSTO-Northeast. NARSTO (formerly the North American Research Strategy for Tropospheric Ozone) is a public/private partnership formed to conduct research on ground-level ozone and aerosols in North America. Data collection efforts during NARSTO-Northeast were focused within and just to the west of the urban corridor running from Washington DC to Boston, but the study area included all of New England and stretched as far west as Ohio and as far south as southern Virginia. An extensive database of routine and supplemental surface and upper-air meteorological and air quality observations was compiled as a result of this effort.
