Glasses of the system K/sub 2/O - Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ - GeO/sub 2/ were investigated across three sections. The coordination states of the Nb ion were studied as a function of the concentration of Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ and the K/sub 2/O - GeO/sub 2/ ratio in the glass. The structural role of niobium and the interaction between niobate and germanate structural units was examined. A model of the processes which occur with the addition of Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ to a glass of a potassium digermanate composition was developed. The emergence of bands characteristic of tetragonal and cubic modifications of KNbO/sub 3/ indicated that the excess (NbO/sub 6/)/sup 7 -/ octahedra and the K/sup +/ ions are deposited as a separate phase, i.e., the onset of processes which precede crystallization.
