Ionic conductivity in low carnegieite compositions based on NaAlSiO/sub 4/

Carnegieite compositions of the type Na/sub 1+x/Al/sub 1+x/Si/sub 1-x/O/sub 4/ with x = 0 to approx. 0.7 were prepared. Na ion conductivities, measured with Na and Au electrodes at approx. 10/sup 3/ Hz, range from 4 x 10/sup -5/ (..cap omega..-cm)/sup -1/ for NaAlSiO/sub 4/ to 5 x 10/sup -3/ (..cap omega..-cm)/sup -1/ at 300 C for Na/sub 1/ /sub 7/Si/sub 0/ /sub 3/O/sub 4/. Substitutions of Li, K, Ca, or Sr raised sigma whereas substitution of Ti for Si raised sigma. Na aluminium silicates with the nepheline structure had lower sigma than carnegieite compositions.
