Pulse generator with a temperature-dependent pulse spacing
Basically the transistor collector-base astable multivibrator is a rectangular-wave signal generator. The periods of the rectangular waves generated are functions of the time required for the transistors to switch from one quasi-stable state to another and back. The periods, therefore, are dependent on the values of the circuit elements. Since some of these circuit elements can be made dependent on temperature, the object of this study was to develop a pulse generator for which the pulse spacing or the pulse repetition rate was linearly dependent on temperature over a wide range. Expressions relating the time periods and the circuit and transistor parameters were developed. In addition, restrictions on the circuit and transistor values were determined. From the expressions for the time periods, the pulse spacing was found to be linearly dependent on the value of one of the base resistors. Replacing this base resistor with a current source established a linear relationship between pulse repetition rate and the current magnitude. A circuit was designed which had large changes in pulse spacing for small changes in temperature. The usefulness of the circuits developed in this study may be extended by noting that the pulse spacing is a function of either the base resistance or the current obtained from a current source. Any parameter change that can be converted into a change in either resistance or current can be converted into a change in pulse spacing.
