Isotopic composition of magnesium nuclei in solar flares

The isotopic ratio /sup 26/Mg//sup 24/Mg = 0.13 +- 0.04 has been obtained from satellite measurements of nuclei accelerated to 35--55 MeV per nucleon in 10 solar flares occurring in the period 1974--1979. This ratio is in agreement with solar system compilations based on terrestrial and meteoritic samples. This result indicates that the observed difference of a factor of approx.2 in the ratio /sup 22/Ne//sup 20/Ne between solar flare measurements ( = 0.13 which agrees with the ratio for neon-A in meteorites) and measurements in the solar wind ( = 0.074) is not likely to be due to mass biasing effects in normal solar flares.
