J.D. Evans, Inc., House B is one of two instrumented single-family residences in Columbia, Maryland. Its solar heating system is used for space heating the home and preheating domestic hot water. The solar heating system consists of an array of water-based flat-plat collectors and a 1000-gallon steel storage tank. Auxiliary heat is provided by a heat exchanger within a heat pump and electrical heating elements in both the air-distribution duct and the hot water tank. The system is described and its performance is analyzed using a system energy balance technique. Individual subsystems applicable to the site are assessed in detail. (LEW)
