Ce valence variation in intermetallic alloys: L/sub III/ absorption spectroscopy results

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)

L/sub III/ absorption spectroscopy measurements, using synchrotron radiation on the Ce/sub 1-x/R/sub x/Pd/sub 3/, R = La/sup 3 +/, Y/sup 3 +/, Th/sup 4 +/, and U and the Ce/sub 1-x/Sc/sub x/Al/sub 2/ alloy systems are presented. The Ce valence variation from the L/sub III/ spectra analysis is correlated with the lattice-parameter variations in the alloys. The roles of the volume and valence of the substitutes in determining the Ce valence state are discussed. The results are discussed in terms of hybridization and current electronic theory.
