University research and scientific education programs of the US Department of Energy

Annually, the Department supports an average of 350 postdoctoral researchers who conduct full-time research at the major DOE laboratories. The Department also supports 3000 to 3500 graduate students each year on university research projects. Twelve hundred undergraduate science and engineering students are supported each summer in both research and instructional programs at over 30 DOE laboratories and contractor facilities. DOE also supports programs and activities involving secondary school science teachers and students.
