A method is described for displaying the detailed contour of a borehole comprising the steps of: measuring, for a plurality of angles in a horizontal plane with respect to a horizontal reference point, the relative travel time of a signal transmitted from a sonde in the borehole, reflected by an area in the wall of the borehole and received by the sonde; calculating a best fit ellipse from the relative travel times; correlating the relative travel times with the best fit ellipse to provide corrected travel times; and displaying the corrected travel times so as to indicate the detailed contour of the borehole.
