Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields: properties, quantities and units, biophysical interaction, and measurements

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6313838
The present report is a comprehensive discussion of radiation protection fundamentals. In addition, it develops a perspective for those quantities and units that are needed to relate, quantitatively, a biological effect to a particular exposure. Although this report includes a section on measurements, it is probable that a separate report providing a detailed examination of measurement techniques will be developed. It should be noted that the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU) has long supplied the definitions of fundamental quantities and units applicable to ionizing radiation and that the latest of the series of ICRU reports providing these definitions has just become available as ICRU Report 33, Radiation Quantities and Units. In that report, the Commission has continued its efforts to instill increasing rigor into the definitions of fundamental quantities and units for ionizing radiation and thereby avoid potential ambiguity in scientific communication.
