A hydrotreating process is described, comprising the steps of: feeding a hydrotreating catalyst into an ebullated bed reactor: partially filling the ebullated bed reactor to a level with a feed comprising oil and hydrogen-rich gases; catching vapor comprising hydrogen and hydrocarbon gases in the feed; passing the vapor generally upwardly through the space above the bleed line; discharging the vapor through a gas outlet above the space; directing reactor oil comprising the feed generally downwardly through the stationary pan and the downcomer in the ebullated bed reactor; and mixing the oil and the vapor together in the presence of the catalyst to produce upgraded oil.
