A crystalline magnesium halide/titanium halide catalyst component is described useful for the polymerization of olefins which has been obtained by the process comprising contacting a crystalline alkoxy magnesium compound with a halide of tetravalent titanium and contacting the resulting halogenated product with a tetravalent titanium halide, wherein the alkoxy magnesium compound is selected from the group consisting of compounds with the following formula: (Mg/sub 4/(OR)/sub 6/(R'OH)/sub 10/)X where X is a counter ion or ions having a total charge of -2 and where R and R', which may be the same or different, are selected from alkyl groups of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
