A National Academy of Sciences symposium last June examined the feasibility of hot water district heating and cooling systems to see if the European experience could transfer to US cities. Conference participants agreed that there is substantial opportunity in the US to expand the use of district heating and cogeneration. An overview of the seven sections of the symposium summarized the major points supporting district heating and outlines DOE-supported projects. The participants also discussed legal, economic, and other barriers to development and the role of government and the electric utilities. There was optimism that the market share of district heating and cooling will increase, especially if small systems prove feasible.
