Adapting the LWR to future needs: SECURE-P (PIUS)

Journal Article · · Power Eng.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6310415
This article describes the PIUS reactor, a simpler, inherently safe reactor system. Ten concepts are behind the reactor: it should be economic in moderate size units (less than or equal to 600 MWe); it should be possible to build in less advanced countries with minimum import of high-tech hardware; it should be flexible and simple to operate; the human factor as a risk element should be eliminated by design; it should be safe enough to be located anywhere; it should be able to survive extreme conditions without risk of contaminating the environment with radioactivity; should be easy to understand by the layman; it should provide maximum disincentives and minimum opportunity for clandestine diversion of fissile material for military purposes; it should avoid use of materials with potential supply problems; and the design should be based on demonstrated, basic technology. The PIUS development program is structured to address the problems now plaguing nuclear power.
