The ASTM D 1159-77 method for determining bromine number of petroleum distillates and aliphatic olefins with boiling points up to 327/sup 0/C has been modified to make it suitable for petroleum fractions and residues with boiling points up to 550/sup 0/C. The method was modified because, to the authors knowledge, there existed no standard method for the determination of bromine number in heavy fuel oils. Bromine number is a measure of the degree of unsaturation of a substance. It is defined as the number of grams of bromine that reacts with 100 g of substance under certain conditions. The results show that the amounts of olefinic hydrogen agree qualitatively with the bromine numbers found. A quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) determination of olefinic hydrogen would therefore be desirable. The concentrations of aromatic hydrogen, on the other hand, show no correlation with the bromine numbers. Results of tests of the modified method show it is suitable for determining the bromine number for heavy residual fuel oils. The method yields values for some ..cap alpha..-olefins which are identical with the theoretical values within experimental error.
