This patent describes a process for the activation of CuO/ZnO/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts, which are used as a catalyst for liquid phase methanol synthesis reaction or liquid phase shift reaction, wherein the catalyst is dispersed in an inert liquid phase medium thereby producing a catalyst slurry and activated by subjecting the catalyst slurry to a temperature ramping in the presence of a hydrogen containing atmosphere, the improvement for achieving full activity of the catalyst.
