Source separation is a method in which the generator of waste materials selectively collects, segregates, and stores desirable components of the waste stream so that they may be reintroduced into the materials market for reprocessing. Market selection, administration, market arrangements, collection and processing equipment, materials preparation, and public education are discussed. The Case Studies illustrate how several different municipalities handle source separation. These municipalities were chosen to represent cities and towns of various sizes, geographic location, and programmatic approaches. A white paper recycling program in state office buildings is also described. Tabulations (alphabetical by town) include potential markets, on-going recycling programs, and used oil haulers licensed in Connecticut. Possible sources of funding and labor for recycling activities, pertinent legislation, and information references for more indepth study are also contained therein.
