India, a democracy with over 850 million people yearning for a better quality of life, may now be one of the most significant long-term opportunities for international private power projects. The United States energy market is entering a slower growth period due to the effects of the recession, demand-side management and areas of regulatory uncertainty. Consequently, the industry has been pushed to look for new opportunities internationally, especially in Great Britain, Eastern Europe and Latin America. Recent reforms of Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, make India an attractive opportunity for the international power market. The paper discusses the increasing demand for power; opportunities and incentives; financing conditions; and doing business in India.
