The preparation of small quantities of methylthio-substituted polychlorinated benzenes, biphenyls, certain dibenzo-p -dioxins, and dibenzofurans and their analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) using different ionization techniques (EI, CI, and NCI) is described. The novel synthesis method involved ..gamma.. irradiation of the polychlorinated parent compounds in dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and results in displacement of a Cl substituent by a CH/sub 3/S group. This fast and simple procedure leads to small but, for GC/MS analysis, sufficient quantities of these potential environmental and biological metabolites. Marked differences were observed in the EI and NCI mass spectra among various CH/sub 3/S-derivatized PCB isomers (MeS-PCBs). The formation of M/sup -/-CH/sub 3/ ions (sulfide anions) is characteristic in NCI for most of these compounds. 18 references, 7 figures, 3 tables.
