After expansion of a Hughes manufacturing plant increased cooling demand, the company installed a thermal energy storage (TES) system that will shift about 1.3 MW to off-peak hours and cut annual electricity costs about $90,000. During on-peak periods, the storage tank will be coupled to the chilled water circulation loop for six buildings. Utility rebates and state tax credits cut the installed cost of the TES system from $1.1 million to $725,000, which was $125,000 more than the cost of installing a centrifugal chiller. Payback for the premium in avoided electricity costs should occur in 18 months. The plant chose a model that employs a eutectic salt solution as the storage medium. This will enable Hughes to locate the concrete storage tank underground on a site already used for storing manufacturing equipment.
