Petroleum and hard minerals from the sea

Book ·
OSTI ID:6306178

Professor Earney in this book has attempted to cover the story of this development on a worldwide basis, including assessment of the magnitude and value of the resources, the manner in which they have been developed, technologies involved, environmental problems, as well as many of the social and political ramifications. The book is divided into two main parts: the continental margin and the deep sea bed. Beginning with a discussion of the hard minerals of the continental margin, the subject shifts to offshore petroleum to which about half of the book is devoted. Most detail concerns the North Sea and offshore United States regions. As to the deep seabed, after a short treatment of plate tectonics, the author concentrates on a description of the origin, distribution, economics, and mining technology of manganese nodules, followed by a discussion of the law of the sea as it relates to deep sea mining. Copious facts and statistics as well as ubiquitous references provide global coverage with enough depth to given more than superficial knowledge of seabed resources.
