Wet and dry deposition of sulfur at Hubbard Brook

Book ·
OSTI ID:6305728
A summary is presented of current aspects of the biogeochemistry of sulfur as it relates to the dry deposition of gases and aerosols in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. From extensive background information, and using an ecosystem approach, it is possible to sum the net fluxes between compartments and across the ecosystem boundary to estimate (by differences) that 6.1 kg/ha of sulfur is added to the ecosystem each year from dry deposition. Based on measurements of sulfur dioxide and particulate sulfur concentrations in the atmosphere, it has been estimated that 0.3 kg S/ha-yr should originate from dry deposition of SO/sup 2/. Corresponding deposition velocities of 0.1 cm/sec for particulates and 0.9 cm/sec for SO/sup 2/ would be necessary for these inputs. Since 1975 an intensive effort has been made to partition the contribution of wet and dry components in bulk precipitation. Results indicate that dry deposition of sulfur measured with bulk precipitation collectors at Hubbard Brook (about 0.75 kg/ha-yr) would represent only about 11% of the total dry deposition to the ecosystem.
