An asymptotic calculation of the probability for Penning ionization of an atom due to long-range dispersive forces in collisions with metastable inert gas atoms is carried out. The asymptotic expression for the probability for the Penning transition is written in the form GAMMA(R) = a/sub n//R/sup n/, and the values of a/sub n/ are calculated for the 2/sup 1/S/sub 0/ state of helium (n = 12) and the /sup 3/P/sub 2/ states of other inert gases (n = 14).
