MWD: state of the art. Conclusion, acoustic, EM systems due in 1979

New measurement-while-drilling (MWD) tools featuring acoustic transmission of data through drill pipe or electromagnetic transmission through the earth will soon be available on the commercial market. The Sperry-Sun, Inc., acoustic MWD system initially will provide data relating the hole azimuth, hole inclination, tool face, high-side and magnetic-north steering, and bottomhole temperature. The acoustic telemetry system will provide an update every 7.2 s in the directional-drilling steering mode; all steering-tool parameters will be available in 36-s intervals. Meanwhile, the electromagnetic MWD system being developed by Develco, Inc., promises significant advantages such as the ability to transmit data without mud flow, transmission while turning, two-way communication, greater reliability, and adaptability to sophisticated modulation and coding schemes. Several years will pass, however, before a single system emerges as a leader in the highly competitive MWD market.
