Plasma waves and instabilities at comets and in magnetospheres

Book ·
OSTI ID:6304063
Various papers on plasma waves and instabilities at comets and in magnetospheres are presented. Individual topics addressed include: spectra of plasma turbulence, particle acceleration, and heating by plasma waves in the interacting plasma; ultralow frequency waves at comets; plasma wave observations at Comets Giacobini-Zinner and Halley; particle scattering and acceleration in a turbulent plasma around comets; particle simulations of nonlinear Whistler and Alfven wave instabilities; review of ionospheric turbulence; and discrete electromagnetic emissions in planetary magnetospheres. Also discussed are: acceleration of thermal plasma in the magnetosphere; quasi-neutral beam propagation in space; ray paths of electromagnetic and electrostatic waves in the earth and planetary magnetospheres; theory of the drift mirror instability; hydromagnetic waves in the dayside cusp region and ground signatures of flux transfer events; characteristics of the MHD waves observed in the earth's magnetosphere and on the ground; observations of nonthermal radiation from planets; theories of nonthermal radiations from planets.
