Summary annual report: IEA cement R and D Program

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6303497
The original work which can be considered to be the forerunner of the IEA Cement R and D Program was the CCMS Cement Industry Study (see EAPA 4:1320), whose objectives were to assess existing and developing technology in the cement industry emphasizing energy efficient use and consumption of energy, develop recommendations for technology transfer, and develop a research program to reduce energy consumption. An IEA conference hosted by the National Swedish Board for Technical Development met in Stockholm, January, 1977, with the cement study group offering for consideration the following subjects: sulfate specifications and gypsum replacement, blended cement properties and limitations, precalciner investigations, and studies of the alkali-aggregate reaction. Subsequent to that meeting, the U.S. agreed to act as a lead country in the development of a cooperative program in which IEA members would be encouraged to participate, assuring good communications. Discussions were held with potential member nations and again Stockholm hosted a meeting in December, 1977. Sixteen delegates were in attendance from Norway, Spain, FRG, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States, and France. A draft technical annex (a program to accomplish research, development, and demonstration to increase efficient use of energy in the cement manufacturing industry and the application of cement) is presented in Appendix A. Appendix B contains information on the IEA Cement R and D program technical documentation for R and D projects.
