Air pollution rating index system

Conference · · J. Air Pollut. Control Assoc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6303038
As the extent and complexity of air pollution problems and control grow, it becomes increasingly apparent that some comprehensive yet simple rating method is needed. It is proposed that the authors may use a universal indexing system to characterize both the magnitude of air pollution sources and the dispersing capacity of the air at specific source locations. The proposed system includes two indices, I/sub s/ and I/sub l/. The source index I/sub s/ is a quantitative measure of the seriousness of a pollution source. The location index I/sub l/ is a quantitative measure of the ability of the atmosphere to dilute pollutants between the source and the point of reception (usually ground level). It should be emphasized that source indices are dependent on only a few factors and can readily be adjusted for changes in process or allowable concentrations. The feasibility of this system will stem from the increased use of ordinances which require registration of pollutants. 1 table.
