The Thermal Energy Storage (TES) Program Plan summarizes current and planned energy storage research and development, technology demonstration, and technology application. The plan detailed in this document emphasizes critical research needs building upon the success of recent efforts while exploring novel solutions to meet these needs. Research and development efforts focus on diurnal, seasonal, and industrial thermal energy storage. Specific research topics include improving thermal energy density and heat transfer rates; identifying innovative physical mechanisms suitable for heat storage; developing effective manufacturing processes appropriate for the end user; and verifying generic models enabling exploitation of site-specific large-scale storage.
