Biomass energy systems and the environment

Book ·
OSTI ID:6302182
This book provides basic information on biomass energy systems to scientists, managers, businessmen, administrators, and the general public, with emphasis on the environmental and social issues related to production. The study is structured to reflect the two distinct phases of biomass energy systems: production and harvest of biomass feedstocks and conversion of these feedstocks to energy. The chapters related to biomass production reflect the five sources of biomass: forests, herbaceous crops, livestock weates, freshwater plants, and marine plants. The chapters devoted to conversion reflect the four categories of conversion technology: anaerobic digestion, fermentation, thermochemical conversion, and direct combustion. Since biomass energy systems are still in the early stages of development, the book represents an evaluation of anticipated environmental and social issues. Early evaluation of potential problems, however, does not guarantee minimal disruption unless it is accompanied by responsible resource management and planning. 407 references, 33 figures, 70 tables.
