Raman characterization of iron clustering in YBa[sub 2](Cu[sub 1[minus]x]Fe[sub x])[sub 3]O[sub 7+[delta]]

The phonon modes of A[sub g] symmetry of YB[sub 2] symmetry of YB[sub 2](Cu[sub 1[minus]x]Fe[sub x])[sub 3]O[sub 7+[delta]] at 435 cm[sup [minus]1] and 502 cm[sup [minus]1] were studied using Raman spectroscopy at various iron concentrations (x), with the aim of gaining an understanding of the role that the two copper-oxygen substructures of plane and chain play in the generation of superconductivity in YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7[minus][delta]]. The room temperature Raman spectra indicated a trend toward saturation in frequency shift that was interpreted as evidence for supporting the occurrence of a type of iron clustering in the (001) basal plane. In addition, the Curie-Weiss type behavior observed might be attributed to the formation of a long range clustering chain for an Fe concentration [ge] 10%.
