A field-theoretic (FT) formalism is developed that describes the dynamics of the fundamental e/sup +/-H three-body system. The S-matrix elements for elastic, inelastic, and rearrangement processes are related to suitable FT Green's functions, and closed equations are obtained for these. Key quantities of the theory are three ''effective potentials,'' ..sigma.., ..xi.., and GAMMA, the fully preside over the elastic, inelastic, and rearrangement processes, respectively, and contain complete information on interchannel couplings as well. Closed equations are obtained for these, along with convenient approximation schemes, that are interpreted diagrammatically. A comparison with more conventional quantum mechanical approaches suggests that the present formalism is most suited for numerical applications, both in the subreactive and rearrangements regimes. The theory can be generalized to more complex systems, of interest to atomic physics.
