Hong Kong turns to coal for power plant additions

Journal Article · · Energy Int.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6299894

The two main utilities in Hong Kong have announced plans for new power stations that will burn coal or oil. But in breaking away from dependence on oil the question arises of a possible trade of energy to China in return for coal. However, the utilities do not want to be tied to a single source of fuel and are looking for contracts with the major coal producing nations around the Pacific. Likely suppliers of coal are Australia, Western Canada, and the People's Republic of China. The decision to change to coal is a logical one for a territory which has no indigenous fuel resources and which is facing a rapid increase in power demand necessitating the installation of larger units.
