A fundamental investigation of cationic flotation processing of pyrite and arsenopyrite was undertaken, based mainly on electrokinetic and on floatability studies; the latter were applied to an auriferous bulk concentrate. It was found that moderate atmospheric oxidation or the presence of ferric ions in solution led to a surface alteration of the two minerals, which resulted in selective adsorption of collector (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) onto the arsenopyrite surface and hence the subsequent selective flotation.
