Masses of Higgs bosons in grand unified models: suppression of flavor-changing neutral scalar currents

We discuss the problem of scalar currents which are nondiagonal in flavor in grand unified models. We show that only soft mixing of the weak doublets of Higgs scalars, which arises in these models after the spontaneous breaking of G into SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) is on the one hand capable of giving large masses (mapprox.(..cap alpha..--1)M, M is the grand unification mass) to all electrically neutral Higgs bosons, blocking Yukawa couplings with flavor change, and can on the other hand induce vacuum expectation values (approx.O(G/sup -1//sub F/)) which can give a reasonable description of the quark-lepton mass spectrum. As an illustration we consider a simple SU(5) model with two quintets of Higgs scalars in a form which can be generalized to an arbitrary number of multiplets of any kind.
