The photochemistry of cis- and trans-stilbene radicals has been investigated in solution by combined pulse radiolysis-laser flash photolysis. Only the cis isomers of the stilbene radicals, photoisomerize. The quantum yields are 0.31 and 0.05 respectively for the cis cation and anion radicals via the second excited doublet state. Excitation of the radicals in the first absorbance band in the near-IR region leads to no detectable photoisomerization.
