This patent describes a particulate filter for engine exhaust gases comprises: (a) a housing; (b) first and second filter members arranged within the housing, the filter members being spaced from each other and including means providing a confined space between the filter members; (c) the filter members being spaced from the housing to provide an annular space between the filter members and the housing; (d) means providing an inlet into the housing for supplying exhaust gases to the confined space; (e) means defining an outlet from the housing for exhaust gases; (f) the exhaust gases directed from the confined space along two paths, one path extending through the first filter member to the outlet and the other path extending through the second filter member and through the annular space to the outlet; (g) the second filter member including a central passage therethrough and the inlet extending through the passage to the confined space; and (h) a swirler disposed in the central passage adjacent the confined space to distribute exhaust gases more uniformly over the surfaces of filter members facing the confined space, the swirler having a radial dimension substantially the same as that of the central passage.
