Preparation and purification of GdCl/sub 3/

GdCl/sub 3/ has been prepared from high purity Gd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ with NH/sub 4/Cl as the chlorinating agent. The optimum time, temperature, air flow rate, and the mixing ratio of Gd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and NH/sub 4/Cl for chlorination were determined. Almost complete conversion (99.8%) of Gd/sub 2/O/sub 3/ to GdCl/sub 3/ was obtained with 2.5 times or more the theoretical amount of NH/sub 4/Cl and with at least a 20 hr reaction time at 250/sup 0/C under a dried air flow. The excess NH/sub 4/Cl was removed from the GdCl/sub 3/ by sublimation at 350/sup 0/C in vacuum. The resulting GdCl/sub 3/ was purified to a dense crystalline GdCl/sub 3/ by distillation in vacuum using Ta crucibles and condensers.
